Baby Food
When I found out I was going to be a Mother, one of my very first purchases was a Baby Bullet. I knew I wanted to make my own purees because that way, I had full control as to what was going into my childs body.
I've been asked a number of times just what I feed my kids when they begin eating solids and I wanted to share my favourite recipes with you!
I felt like both of my kids were ready to eat way before they turned 6 months (there are signs!) but as a precaution, I waited. I started them off with simple purees such as sweet potatoes, squash and green beans. This is the time to start off simple because their little bodies are still developing and learning how to break down this new found food. Remember to wait 4-7 days before moving onto the next food to see if there is a possibility for allergies. I've also been asked about whether or not I use organic foods and the answer I give everyone is 80/20. I've been using organic foods for a very long time now and it's just a natural habit of mine to reach for that vs. the regular. I say, its ones personal decision as to whether or not going organic is the way. Oh and I forgot to add, I steam all of my fruits and vegetables and use the Baby Bullet to puree them.
Now that Baby H is nearing 9 months, I've been venturing into the heavy duty proteins such as chicken and I've been mixing a lot of her foods together, which she loves. Here are some favourite recipes of mine that I have served both of my children.
These are all recipes I've found on Pinterest. In no way am I a Doctor and if you're curious about the below recipes, always refer to your Family Doctor or Pediatrician. The following recipes are meant for children 8 months and older
Organic Pasta Stars & Banana (or any fruit) Puree
Ingredients:
- 2 tbs Organic Pasta Stars
- 1 Fresh Banana
Directions:
Cook your pasta as advised on the box, add to pureed bananas, mix and serve! I sometimes add a bit of breast milk to the mix.
Chicken or Turkey Purée (Basic)
Ingredients:
- 1 cup cold and cooked boneless chicken/turkey – chopped into no bigger than 1 inch pieces
- 1/4 c cooking juice (save the juices that you cooked the meat in) or plain water
Directions:
Place chicken/turkey chunks in blender or food processor and puree until a powdery mix is formed. Slowly add water and puree further until a smooth consistency is created. Add as much liquid as needed to make a consistency appropriate for your baby. You may add veggies or fruits to this puree as you like.
Brown Rice Chicken & Peaches
Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup cooked boneless chicken – chopped
- 1/4 cup cooked brown rice
- 1 ripe peach
- 1 tb juice (white grape or apple juice may be used or use water)
- 1 tb milk and 2 ts wheat germ
Directions:
Mix all ingredients together, transfer to blender/food processor and puree or chop to make textured for older babies
When I was first starting out, I referred a lot to my Baby Bullet book for recipes and this chart below. Introducing solids was definitely a favourite time for my Husband and I. We loved watching C take his first bite of new foods and it was pretty cute to watch his facial expressions showing us if he liked the food or not. Baby H is doing the same and I love every second of it as well! Enjoy this time!
