DIY Farmhouse Sign

I've been itching to do another DIY and with all of the projects I have on the go (more on that later), I haven't had the time to really figure out what I want to do. I love anything and everything that Magnolia sells on their website but with the exchange rate AND the ridiculous shipping cost, it looks like buying something off their website just doesn't seem realistic (for right now).

I came across a distressed FARMHOUSE sign that just looks too good not to have in my home. After countless of episodes of Fixer Upper, I'm kind of obsessed with everything modern farmhouse. Since I made one of these signs before, I thought this would be the perfect DIY to fill my need to DO. This time around I wanted to give it a more distressed look so I decided to pop my stain cherry and get a can full for future projects.

What you'll need:

  • 1 wood plank in the type of wood and size you want (I used Pine!)

  • Stain (I used Mixwax in Dark Walnut, it works so well with Pine wood!)

  • An old shirt that you don't mind getting dirty! (You'll be using this to rub your stain onto the wood)

  • White acrylic paint

  • Black acrylic paint

  • Pencil

  • Sandpaper (I used 150 grit sandpaper)

  • Letter stencil

  • Paintbrushes in all sizes (I used a small one for lining my letters and a slightly bigger one to fill in the space)

Directions:

1) Stain your wood and wait until it dries

2) Once dried, paint your wood with the white acrylic and let dry

3) Stencil FARMHOUSE or any word you'd like with a pencil

4) Get your black acrylic paint out and use a fine paint brush to line the letter and a bigger brush to fill in the letters and let dry

5) Once your plank is to your liking, start sanding the white paint to give it that distressed look and VOILA, all done! Now you've got yourself a BEAUTIFUL farmhouse "vintage" sign!

If you don't have stencils available, print letters of your favourite font out! I decided that my letter stencils were much too big for this project so I ended up printing out these.

They worked so well! (Baskerville font)

This sign is specifically for my DIY wood shelves (coming soon!).

It's sitting on the kids hall tree for now ;)

I will make sure to post an updated photo once I complete my shelves!
